Sitefinity 4.2 Released
18 Aug 2011
Overview
The release of Sitefinity ASP.NET CMS 4.2 follows
Telerik’s commitment to deliver the most advanced web content management
system while maintaining an extreme focus on usability and
productivity. The Sitefinity 4.2 release introduces the official release
of Sitefinity ecommerce – thus delivering complete solutions to online
businesses. Also included in this release is a file storage provider for
libraries, better alternative publishing filtering, and performance
improvements of Sitefinity administration.
New Feature Highlights
-
Ecommerce Module
Sitefinity
ecommerce offers the flexibility and all the features needed to manage a
successful online business. The new ecommerce module offers granular
control over critical ecommerce tasks, such as product, manufacturer,
and departmental management, while remaining intuitive and easy to use.
With support for custom product types and variations, formulas-based
calculation, and hierarchical categorization, the module offers infinite
flexibility for products presentation.

Sitefinity
ecommerce also facilitates real-time shipping and tax calculation, as
well as payment processing, enabling fast, efficient, and reliable store
administration. Other key features of the new Sitefinity ecommerce
module include:
- Managing items on sale
- Customizable regional currency and exchange rate settings
- Support for common payment services such as credit cards and PayPal
- Multiple sorting, tagging, and presentation styles for front-end product listings
- Flexible reporting and metrics tools

-
Performance & Stability Improvements
The
latest release of Sitefinity includes essential improvements making the
system faster and more stable than ever. This is a part of an ongoing
initiative to refine and optimize the product with each new release.
Leading up to this release the team worked with a small group of
customers to expose upgrade issues from real-world scenarios not
encountered through regular testing.
Sitefinity 4.2 also includes better performance for websites running on Microsoft Azure.
-
File Storage Provider for Libraries
By
default, Sitefinity stores uploaded files in the database. With the new
release, images, videos or documents uploaded via the Sitefinity CMS
administration are already stored on the file system closer to the end
users. This guarantees improved connectivity and faster data transfer of
files.

The
file provider is configured by Library. For example, Sitefinity CMS
Users can create a Library called “Product Images” and another Library
called “High-Rez Product Images”. The “High-Rez Product Images”, which
require larger disk storage, could be configured to use the file system.
Files can easily be transferred from one library to another and Sitefinity will automatically handle the conversion.
-
Localization of Page Templates
Sitefinity
4 already enables customers to create localized versions of pages.
With the latest release, CMS users are also able to localize Page
Templates.

-
Multi-lingual Search
Once
you created and published content in different languages, you will need
to allow your site visitors to search multilingual content quickly and
accurately. Sitefinity 4.2 allows you to filter search results based on
the visitors’ language preferences.
-
Filtering for Publishing
Publication feeds & notifications can now be filtered by language, dates and/or taxonomy (tags, categories).

-
Fluent API improvements
The
Sitefinity 4.2 release also introduces lots of improvements to the
Fluent API, which will dramatically simplify and reduce the code needed
to create new modules or customizations to existing Sitefinity modules.
Full backwards compatibility has been maintained.
-
Integrated Help & Resources
The
new Help and Resources page in the Sitefinity administration allows
easier access to helpful resources and latest announcements.
